Year 6 Kingswood Residential 2011
Day 1 - Monday 17th October
The journey down...
The children were very excited as we departed without a hitch and there were only a few tears. Miss Whyman soon managed to compose herself and the children were all fine.
There were no traffic problems coming down but I am sure we are saving all those for the way back and the service station did a roaring trade when we stopped for lunch. Lizzie somehow sneaking a Burger King for herself and Azhar soon realizing that the dinosaur neck cushion at £9.99 probably was not the best thing to spend his money on. We settled on a set of Top Trumps and a packet of sweets.
Quad biking
Javeria is going to be billed for a new set of bollards.Apparently the rules of the road do not apply to her and the road is just not wide enough anyway.
Team challenge
George Bennett was the first to scamper over the high ropes and where George goes it seems his team are sure to follow. We shall see how he and the rest of Mrs Harne's group fare on the more hair raising activities as the week goes by.
Can and Hugo were obviously feeling a little fatigued after their long journey and required a search party before the first activity. They were found in their room and claimed to still be 'making their beds' when it was clear from the yawns that they had just had a sneaky snooze.
We are surrounded by hundreds of other year 6s from around the south of England as well as some French pupils so we are looking forward to meeting a few of those and speaking a bit of French.
The kids have been fantastic so far and we are all looking forward to dinner and shall be doing some mini olympic activities in the dark.
Mini Olympics
The fourth kingswood Olympiad was a multi-school affair with floodlight failures but the children were able to burn off plenty of energy doing relays of all description. In the half light it was still possible to see Nya zooming along with the hockey stick and ball in first place and Jessica Tee holding on to the egg in the egg and spoon race with both hands.
The boys have finished getting ready for bed and brushed their teeth and so have now obviously moved on to their sweets. Mrs Harne is doing her Florence Nightingale rounds with a lamp and the sackful of medication but I hear rumours she is charging the children a fee of one lollipop before she will administer any.
Kieran is doing a really good job at patrolling the corridors making sure everyone else is getting off to sleep even though he should be in bed and Ryan's attempts at ghost stories are level 4 at best but his room seem happy enough with them.
Day 2 - Tuesday 18th October
The boys were up and ready for breakfast after being rushed through the showers for quarter to eight and were all set to go down. It was a shame breakfast was not until quarter to nine. Ooops! Not so sorry as this was a chance to get out rooms all sorted out.
Zipwire
The sun has decided to shine on us and it is now a glorious morning. We are about to do zipwire and we are very excited!
Azhar was reluctant to begin with but raced back for a second go after he had done it once and Reece's face was brilliant as he wailed his way down. There is a rumour that Miss Whyman beat Mr Denman in their race down the wire and this was apparently caused by Mr Ds wire sagging quite a lot more than Miss Ws - can't think why that would be so I am sure that neither is true.
Noor should consider a job with the SAS when she is older since she is able to land effortlessly on her feet whilst traveling at rapid speeds.
Jacob's ladder
Ridiculously difficult. Reece could scamper to the top whilst Mr D was left puffing and panting on the sixth rung.
The children have all been fantastically well behaved and are a real credit to you all. Harriet has been chattering away happily to children from other schools and the attitude from all the children for some of the difficult and particularly high tasks has been brilliant. You should be very proud.
Pictures will be forthcoming as soon as we have a moment to upload and send them.
