Conservation Area Conversion

Our conservation area appears to have become a little overgrown over the last few years.  The school ECO council have tried to keep on top of things but when we got a call from the Environment agency offering to help us with any ecological projects we jumped at the chance to develop this important learning area.

A large team from the environment agency arrived on site early on Wednesday morning.  By the time most children had arrived at school a lot of low hanging branches had already been removed and the workers were busy readying the area for conversion.  During the day, children have watched with anticipation as the area gradually changed in front of their eyes.  Paving slabs have been lifted and then set back to form a sweeping path, pallets have been put in place to create creepy-crawly hotel and the pond has been cleaned with a new boggy area added.

Some children were lucky to see some of the wildlife being cared for whilst their natural habitat was 'upgraded'.  We saw some of the frogs that have called the conservation area home for the last few years and also saw a toad that had been living under a pile of leaves.

Once all the new plants have been put in place and minibeasts welcomed back to our new and improved area, we will begin to take children for a guided tour around the site and really 'get our hands dirty'!
