Chair of Governors |
Welcome to the Middleton Governors' page.
All the governors are very proud of our school. It is welcoming, with a happy inclusive atmosphere where all children are encouraged to achieve their full potential, not only in their educational learning but also in sports, creativity and social awareness. You will see examples of the school's activities in a wide range of areas throughout this website.
Latest News
Last term, as you might imagine, several of us were involved in the changes in school management brought about by Miss Plaskitt's two-year leave of absence, with our decision to ask Mrs Sadler Penn to be acting Head Teacher, together with Mrs Morrell's new role as acting Deputy Head. We also continued to check the development of plans for the new classroom and major school upgrade planned for next year.
This term, there are several issues we will be examining, including the implementation of the workplace parking levy and the contractual changes required by the local authority for non-teaching staff (some of you may have heard of the 'single status' policy). This term is a busy time for our 'Strategic Development Subcommittee' who, together with the management team, will be examining in detail last year's results at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. In addition, following discussions we'll be agreeing the targets the school will set for this year’s results and setting the school priorities in our annually updated school improvement plan.
Our School
Over the last five years our school has undergone significant changes to ensure our educational provision is first rate and appropriate for the community we serve. We strive to keep abreast of technological developments and ensure our broad curriculum meets the needs of children today.
What do governors do?
The role of a school governor is most commonly described as a “critical friend”. We are expected to challenge the school in a positive, supporting manner. We are also legally responsible for implementing a number of policies. We help the school provide the best possible education for all children. The school governing body comprises parents, the head teacher, other school staff and community and local authority governors. Together, this group is responsible for taking a strategic overview of the school. We monitor a variety of school activities through visits to the school and talking to teachers.
I am confident that you will find us a welcoming and friendly bunch. The relationship between staff and governors is certainly a very positive one. We meet formally once a term and hold additional meetings to discuss issues in more depth.
As a school governor you can contribute to decisions that affect the way the school is run. Everything from building projects to SATs results are considered by governors. We also occasionally get involved in recruiting new staff.
I have been a parent governor since 2004 and in 2007 I became the chair of governors. I find being a governor a very interesting, rewarding and enjoyable experience. For me personally, as someone who has benefited from, and very much values education, it is a way of giving a little back by supporting the staff and children at Middleton. In addition, I get an excellent appreciation of my children's education.
All governors receive training on many aspects of being a school governor and the range of initiatives that are being implemented. New governors especially receive lots of training and support.
Contacting governors
If there is anything you would like to discuss with governors about the school, please feel free to contact me (simply drop me a note via the school office or via email: governors@middleton.nottingham.sch.uk) or via any of the other governors. Please note we do not become involved with issues concerning specific children, which should be discussed with your child's teacher or the head.
If you would like to find out more about becoming a governor at Middleton you can contact me or any other governor or the head teacher through the school.
