From September 2014 all Key Stage 1 pupils will receive high quality and healthy school meals.
Each pupil will benefit from:
- individual menus created for each school
- food packed with goodness
- fresh, local and award winning ingredients
- traceable supply chains
- vegetarian options available every day
- all menus meeting strict nutritional guidelines.

Our team of vegetable superheroes are adding a twist to school dinners, providing fun activities whilst teaching pupils about nutrition and making food fun.
It’s about more than just health benefits though; taste is important to children and only the best will do. By making sure that there is a wide variety of food and flavours available every day – even fussy eaters are happy eaters!
Nutrition & learning
Each menu has been designed to strict Government guidelines which are developed specifically to meet the needs of young children.
As part of school meal time, Nottingham City Council encourages children to learn during their lunchtime by socialising with friends, experiencing different foods and understanding about healthy eating.
Tailored to your child’s taste
Menus are tailored individually for schools based on the tastes and preferences of pupils at each school. To cater for younger children, many dishes are served with separate sauces and accompaniments to provide a wider choice for pupils so they can try new foods or stick to their favourites if they prefer.
By providing dishes that suit every child’s likes and requirements, everyone can join in with the activities and fun! Through school meals, pupils can take part in competitions, giveaways, prize draws and theme days.
We work closely with our suppliers to obtain the freshest, highest quality ingredients.
It is essential that we know where every ingredient comes from.
Here are some examples:
- our beef is reared in Derbyshire
- we use venison from Thoresby Park
- all of our turkey comes from Louth in Lincolnshire
- our sausages and chicken are from Maloney’s in Tuxford.
And there’s more! Local suppliers have created a special and unique spice blend just for our pupils meaning that all of our curry dishes are authentic and can be adapted to suit pupils’ tastes.
- Our vegetables are fresh and seasonal
- We only use Marine Steward Council (MSC) accredited fish which means that all fish and fish products are sourced from sustainable stocks
Something for everyone
In addition to the wide variety of choices available every day, all menus can be adapted to meet individual medical dietary requirements of certain pupils.
- Soya milk and spread is available as an alternative option to meet dietary requirements

Nottingham City Council provides a school meals catering service to over 65 schools across the city. Nottingham City Council develops a general menu which is then adapted to meet the requirements of each individual school.
Every day, each school offers a meat and vegetarian option. Some schools also offer an additional halal option as a main course to meet the requirements of some pupils. In schools where a halal option is provided, this is an addition to the existing meat or fish and vegetarian choices.
The meat and fish options provided as part of the daily menu do not contain halal products.
The halal dishes served by Nottingham City Council use only ingredients that meet the UK halal standard Halal Food Authority which is in line with the Welfare of Animals Regulations 1995.
Raj Foods are the approved supplier to Nottingham City Council for all halal dishes; Raj Foods prepare all halal meats for Nottingham City Council in a designated halal production facility.
Halal dishes are then delivered independently to any other food orders and are stored and served in separate heat compartments using a strict colour coded system. All serving staff who work with halal products are fully trained in this areas.

What we’ve been up to…
Last week 12 pupils had a fun day out at the Tennis Centre. Mark Dennison ,from BBC Radio Nottingham, interviewed some of them. Here is the Podcast:
Our RRSA steering group children were invited to be involved in a special fundraising event to help our sister school in Togo. The students organising this event were inspired by our RRSA group’s workshop on Children’s Rights in December 2017 and as a result wanted to help promote RRSA in the University. The fundraising event took place at the University, where we helped to sell cakes, tombola tickets and distribute leaflets about UNICEF and our sister school in Togo. We were also given a tour of the university and had a competition to design a university .Thanks to our students we helped to raised £100.83 . We had a fantastic day and returned to school with treats provided by the students and their tutor Fiona Hunter.
